First Metatarsal-phalangeal Joint (MTP ) Arthrodesis

MTP Joint

First metatarsal-phalangeal joint (MTP) arthrodesis is a surgical procedure designed to help relieve pain in the front of the foot. It also corrects deformities within the MTP joint caused by injury, arthritis or genetic defect. This procedure will ultimately fuse the bone at the base of the big toe to the first metatarsal.

Consult with our knowledgeable team to determine whether this procedure is right for you. We'll relieve your foot pain and help you take the first step toward a full recovery.

Surgical Procedure

Your surgeon will position you so that the top of the foot is clearly visible. An anesthetic will be administered to ensure you experience no pain during the surgery. Your surgeon will then sterilize the area just prior to making the incision.

The incision is made above the MTP joint so the surgeon can properly examine the joint. Cartilage between the bones will then be removed.

If your toe is misaligned, the bones will be repositioned. Metal pins or screws will hold the toe in place for later fusion as well as angle the big toe slightly upward for walking. A bone graft may be applied around the joint to aid in fusion and a metal plate may be placed above the joint to help stabilize the toe.

Following Surgery

Following the procedure the incision will be closed using sutures or surgical staples. The foot will next be carefully bandaged and placed within a special splint or half cast. In many cases you’ll be allowed to leave the hospital the same day of the procedure.

Recovery will take some time. A special wooden sole shoe or moving cast may be required for a period of 6 weeks. A full recovery can take anywhere between 6 and 9 months following your surgical procedure.
